What the reaction is drawing from

The resemblance doesn't have to be exact. A particular tone, a familiar dynamic — and the old response fires. It's the match that lights something older.

What the present moment is matching can be specific source material: an earlier experience, a relational dynamic, an anticipated rejection or conflict, a body sensation, or an unfinished emotional charge. The cue does not need to look like the original — it needs to resemble it closely enough for the system to respond.

Understanding this is real and often genuinely valuable. The insight is not the problem. The reaction is not being produced by a lack of insight — it is being produced by source material that still carries activation.

Until that source material changes, the reaction keeps arriving when the cue lands, even when the person can name the pattern accurately.

The method

What the method works on

The method works directly on what the trigger traces back to — the specific source material the trigger is drawing from: earlier experiences, relational patterns, anticipated responses, body sensations, or unfinished emotional charge. As the activation on that material is worked down, the pattern-match response to present-day triggers reduces.

This is not about developing better responses at the moment of triggering. It is not impulse control or pausing before reacting. It is about working back to what the trigger is actually drawing from — until it no longer carries the activation that drives the reaction.
